GCCLC computer training classes are designed using a:

  • Standard 17" monitor set to a medium resolution
  • Standard keyboard for typing information into the computer
  • Standard mouse or trackball for navigation and giving commands to the computer.

Course content is delivered verbally by instructors and through the use of a large display screen. Each student also receives a manual of course material, printed in normal size font. None of the special Microsoft Accessibility Features (available in Windows ME/XP) are used in any of our courses.

To be able to participate, students must be able to:

  • Read 12 point text on a standard computer monitor at normal viewing distance (approximate 20")
  • Hear an instructor. We can seat people with hearing difficulties at stations near the front of the class, but these are still 8' to 12' from the instructor. Unfortunately, as we share the building with other users, we cannot use amplification equipment and we are not equipped with "loop" or other hearing technology
  • View a large screen (6’ x 8’) at a distance of 20' to 40'
  • Have the hand and eye co-ordination skills to control either a normal mouse or trackball.
  • Be able to read a book with normal size text

If you feel you might have difficulties meeting these requirements, please discuss your concerns with any of our staff, prior to registration. Although we will make every effort to accommodate people with disabilities, please understand that our courses are designed to meet the above minimum requirements. Please note that RSVP and FREED have special programs that can help disabled people to use computers, through the use of specialized tools, applications and accessibility features.

All classes delivered at the Gold Country Computer Learning Center use the Windows XP operating system. The basic and introductory courses use MS Works Suite as the working application and students for these classes will find it useful if they have this application on their computer at home.

General

  • Please do not park in the designated places reserved for the Meals on Wheels delivery cars (labeled HDM). Additional parking is available at Gate 3, if needed.
  • A public telephone, water fountain and the Rest Rooms are located in the lobby.
  • If you bring a cell/mobile phone, please switch it off or to silent mode during class.
  • Coffee breaks are approximately 10 minutes. Coffee is 25 cents. Anyone can bring in cookies (or other goodies) for our break periods. Remember! ... No liquids near the computers.
  • Make a note of where the emergency exits are.
  • If you have a physical disability, hearing loss, visual problem, etc., we would like to know as soon as possible to attempt special accommodations, if needed.
  • Please sign up for our free lab time as frequently as possible.  A coach or instructor will be on hand during lab time to help you practice, do your homework or just answer questions. A log book is available in the classroom showing the times and days of  labs or you can sign up on our website www.gcclc.org
  • Try to attend our Seminars (only $10 or $15 for couple) - the 4th Wednesday of the month from 1:30pm - 4pm.  Also, come to our free Computer Users Group Meetings on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 9:00 - 11:00 (except Aug and Dec).   A $2.00 donation is requested for the room.

Computer Classes

  • Classes will begin on time.  Please be seated at your computer and ready to go.
  • Comfort is important, so adjust your chair before class starts and please do not start your computer until instructed.
  • The Monitor is normally left on – no need to press the Monitor power button.  Only the computer will be turned on and off for classes.
  • Computer shut down procedures are very important, so please wait until the instructor leads you through this. NEVER turn off the computer by just pressing the power button.
  • Bring your name badge, lesson manual and Compact Disk (CD) to every class. Your name tent card will be on top of the computer you're using.  Please leave it in place to be collected at the end of each class.
  • Please remember to remove your CD before you shut down after closing all programs.
  • Please put your name on your manual and the CD. If left behind, ask an instructor or coach to retrieve it from our Lost & Found area.
  • Try to avoid taking notes, or "jumping ahead" of the instructions, as you’re apt to miss instructions being given. Most course material is covered in the manual.
  • Please ask if we use a term or acronym you don’t understand, or if you can’t follow the instructor.  The appendix in your manual is a great place to get answers.  Remember you’re here to learn, so please ask!
Class attendance is important.  If you have to miss a class, please contact the instructor (or leave a message at the Senior Center, 273-4961)
